Grace Kelly and Burt Lancaster are excellent examples of a very female and a very male face and they illustrate most of the differences we’ve looked at.

Burt’s hairline is not actually very high but look how it recedes at the corners in the classic male “M” shape. Look also at how his brow ridge protrudes and how his eyebrows sit under the ridge and compare to Grace’s flat forehead with high, arched brows. His nose is long and straight with wide nostrils; her nose is concave, narrow and slightly turned up. Grace’s mouth perfectly illustrates the typical short female top lip exposing the upper teeth and her cheekbones stand higher and further forward than Burt’s. Finally, look at Grace’s delicate jaw with its gentle curve from ear to chin and compare it to the sheer bulk of Burt’s jaw with its square corners and tall, wide chin.

At the other end of the scale we have Sigourney Weaver and Leonardo di Caprio who are good examples of a woman with a masculine face and a man with a feminine face. Obviously Sigourney’s shaved head and absence of make-up emphasise the point but notice her prominent brow ridge, her relatively thin lips with a long top lip; the wide, square jaw angles and the square chin with its flat base and two corners. Leo on the other hand has a fairly flat forehead, small and slightly turned up nose and full lips with a very short top lip. The lower third of his face is relatively narrow with a V-shaped chin that tapers to a single point. His hairline is also reasonably low but it does have the male “M” shape.
